how to install pentaho

This blog post will share how to install pentaho business intelligent (Pentaho BI) suit.  To install pentaho, you may download binary distribution here. This distribution applicable for both windows and linux. In this case we will share how to install pentaho on ubuntu linux.

At the very first step, extract your pentaho distribution in a folder (we will cal this forder as installation path for now and later). make sure no white space or puctuation in the full path of your installation path. using command line, go to your installation path

cd <your installation path>

make sure all *.sh file are executable

chmod +x -R *.sh

edit your, add some lines below on the top of this file:

JAVA_HOME="<your java home>"
 JAVA_OPTS="-Djava.awt.headless=true -Xms384m -Xmx1024m -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=768m"
CATALINA_HOME="<pentaho installation path>/tomcat"
CATALINA_BASE="<pentaho installation path>/tomcat"
CATALINA_OPTS="-Djava.awt.headless=true -Xms384m -Xmx1024m -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=768m"

now you ready to start pentaho, type command below in your command line tools:


you will see environment variable used during pentaho start process:

to see the starting progress, you can follow update on the logs file, type command below:

tail -f tomcat/logs/catalina.out

at the end, you will see a clue that state Pentaho BI server has been started

you can access your pentaho from browser, go to http://localhost:8080, you will redirected to pentaho login page.

use username Admin and password password to login, laviola, you just installed Pentaho BI Suite
